Hispanic students comprised the most prevalent ethnic group in Tom Green County schools in the 2023-24 school year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Of the 18,569 students attending Tom Green County schools, 56% were Hispanic. White students were the second largest ethnicity, making up 37% of the total enrollment.

In the previous school year, Hispanic students also made up the largest ethnic group in Tom Green County, comprising 55.7% of the student body.

Glenn Middle School had the most even distribution of races among the schools in the county, which included 54.5% Hispanic students, 37.3% white students, 3.4% multiracial students, 2.9% Black students, 1.6% Asian students, 0.3% American Indian students, and 0.2% Pacific Islander students.

When compared to the previous school year, total public school enrollment in the county dropped 0.8%.

“As a result, many districts in our very own Central Texas region are being forced to cut back on essential programs, services, consider school closures, and adopt deficit budgets just to provide students with the education that they deserve,” Hutto ISD Trustee James Matlock said.
