The only school district in Irion County had rising enrollment in the 2021-22 school year, according to the Texas Education Agency report.

There were 334 students in the halls of Irion County ISD schools, 3.4% higher than the year before.

Enrollment in Irion County was steady compared to the state’s trend of increasing enrollment.

Out of all the students welcomed in the 2021-22 school year, 50.6% of the students were girls, and 49.4% were boys.

Data also showed that most of the students were white, representing 69.8% of the Irion County ISD total enrollment.

Irion County ISD has a main office in Mertzon and is the only school district within Irion County.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.

Education in Texas is often a hot button issue, especially as test scores lag behind other states.

“The problems commonly cited are flaws in the school financing system, relatively low teacher salary, poor test performance by students, dropouts from traditional schools in favor of charter schools, gun violence, and mental health issues,” claimed the Texas Almanac.
