The Texas Historical Commission has named two Concho Valley county courthouses as recipients of Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Round XI Grants.
The Texas 86th Texas Legislature approved $25 million for the grants, with Mason and Kimble counties among the nine qualifying applicants.
Mason County received a $4.1 million full restoration grant. Its 110-year-old Classical Revival courthouse will undergo a full exterior restoration of masonry, roofing, doors, windows, hazardous materials abatement, replacement of outdated mechanical and electrical systems, and the installation of a fire detection and notification, the commission said on its website.
Essentially, Mason County intends to restore the original appearance of its courthouse.
Kimble County will used its $378,000 grant to perform a full restoration of its Art Deco courthouse. A major part of the work will include the removal of the 1973 addition. The building is expected to also be rehabilitated with a new elevator and electrical and mechanical systems.
