The realization of the Ports-to-Plains project that would extend Interstate 27 parallel with Interstate 35 at an estimated cost of $23 billion, is progressing as a feasibility study nears completion.
According to reporting by KXAN, Reps. Jodey Arrington (R-Lubbock) and Henry Cueller (D-Laredo) have introduced a bill to designate the proposed route for I-27 as a federal highway. Arrington said the designation would be necessary to secure the funding for the project.
KLST News reported that the feasibility study for the project is in the editing stage, and numbers have yet to be released.
“We’ve already seen the benefits of having what you could consider the Ports-to-Plains corridor to be,” Michael Looney with the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce told KLST News. “It's effectively a reliever route, a commercial reliever route, to I-35."
I-35 is the major inter-regional highway that runs from Mexico to Canada.
