SAN ANGELO – The Tom Green County Jail has halted video visitation that is usually conducted in the jail's lobby.
The Texas Commission on Jail Standards recommended that jails put visitation on hold until the coronavirus is under control. Gov. Greg Abbott's office also made similar recommendations.
Capt. Todd Allen says the move was made to ensure the health and safety of the inmates, staff and visitors.
"The change was made after much deliberation, but is in the best interest of the staff, inmates and the general public," he said.
The jail is still allowing online visitation. Allen says visitors can access the portal through their smartphones and home internet.
"While we understand this may cause some difficulties and hardships, please understand that the Tom Green County Sheriff's and Jail are doing our part to help stop the spread of this virus and to keep the staff, inmates, friends and families healthy," said Allen.
This comes amid President Donald Trump declaring a national emergency last week in an effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus. Trump has unlocked billions of dollars needed for the war against the virus.
“To unleash the full power of the federal government under this effort today, I'm officially declaring a national emergency,” Trump said. “Two very big words."
Trump announced partnerships with many private companies that he says will allow Americans to find out if they need to be tested. Citizens will also have access to a testing site in their areas. Some of these facilities will have a drive-thru option.
Vice President Mike Pence, who Trump put in charge of the administration’s coronavirus task force, says Americans will have "drive-in sites to get tested for the virus,
“Very soon, Americans will be able to go to these drive-in sites,” Pence said.
